The Fort Wayne woman accused in the homicide of her 9-year-old stepson in December has pleaded guilty. Alesha L. Miller, 30, of Fort Wayne is expected to be sentenced to 30 years in prison at a May 24 hearing after pleading guilty Thursday to felony aggravated battery and to two counts of felony neglect of a dependent. The state will drop a fourth felony charge of neglect, which is a higher level felony than the other neglect charges.
Fort Wayne police are investigating a reported fight at a north-side bar that is partly owned by a police officer. Police were called at 2:37 a.m. Sunday to Elev8 Lounge at 5745 St. Joe Road.

TOKYO : A Japanese woman recognized as the world's oldest person, Kane Tanaka, has died at age 119, about eight months short of her goal of reaching 120. Born on Jan. 2, 1903, Tanaka loved playing the board game Othello and had a penchant for chocolate and fizzy drinks. She was certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest living person in 2019 when she was 116. In media occasions, she said she was still enjoying life and hoped to live until 120.

INDIANAPOLIS : NCAA President Mark Emmert is stepping down after 12 tumultuous years leading an association that has become increasingly marginalized while college sports has undergone massive changes and been besieged by political and legal attacks. NCAA Board of Governors Chairman John DeGioia announced the move Tuesday and said it was by mutual agreement. Emmert, 69, will serve in his role until a new president is found or until June 30, 2023.

INDIANAPOLIS : The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has suspended the officers involved and launched two investigations after a man in custody died after being shot with a Taser. The department's Critical Incident Response Team arrived at the scene of the incident Monday on the city's northeast side to conduct a criminal investigation. The department's Internal Affairs department is conducting a separate investigation, IMPD said.
